As branch sociology, medical sociology studies the medical system social institutions, the relationships between them and doctor – patient – care system relationship. The study field of medical sociology also includes the social construction of health and diseases as human experiences, the quality of life from the health perspective, the life-style and behavior in the health system, social life from the medical perspective, etc. The social environment influences the health status through a series of social determinants:
– access to health services: accessibility, costs, the distance to the medical institution, the level of professionalism, etc.
– the quality of public hygiene – the quality of the drinking water, the air, the sanitation;
– the lifestyle – aspects related to the diet: the eating habit submits to “fashion” and can be educated;
– family planning – the families using contraceptives have fewer family members, therefore they can take better care of their children and the women will have a better health state;
– living conditions – the existing space, lightning, ventilation, hygiene;
– working conditions and the occupational status – work schedule, work-related stress, predisposition to accidents at the work place;
– medium morbidity and mortality in a territory/population, both general and juvenile;
